The Indianapolis Checkers joined the league for
the 1979/80 season and played in the league until the league
folded after the 1983-84 season. During their 5 years in the old
CHL the Checkers parent team was the New York Islanders. The
Checkers used the same color and style of jerseys as the Islanders did for all
their five years in the C.H.L.
Indianapolis Checkers 80's
Here's a home jersey from the Indianapolis Checkers. The original owner of this jersey stated that this jersey was from the I.H.L. I've have many photos from the CHL Indianapolis Checkers and they also wore this same manufacturer and style of jersey during their years in the Central Hockey League. I'm not disputing that they did not wear this style in the I.H.L. More research is needed to find out who wore it and what season it was worn. The jersey is a mesh Sandow, the tag in the neck is to worn out but the jersey measures around a size 54. Two color numbers on sleeves and back all sewn on. A great looking logo on front is made of the same material as the numbers and is individually sewn onto a white background then sewn on front. The wear is good with some light board burns and tears on both sleeves and numbers. Back of the jersey has a few burns with the best one just to the right of the Sandow SK logo. Front of the jersey has a few small burns on the waist area. Just two light stick marks on the lower right and upper left front of the jersey. The biggest mark on the jersey is a large red blob near the left shoulder. It looks like board paint or maybe a goal post paint that has melted into the material just like a board burn. No real good signs of a nameplate on back. Loop style fight strap. Sandow SK logo screened on tail.
Indianapolis Checkers 1982-83:
Here's a great jersey that was worn by one of the famous "Slapshot" brothers. This road Checkers jersey was worn by Dave Hanson during the1982-83 season. Dave appeared in 80 games scoring 18 goals 21 assists and racked up 285 penalty minutes. The jersey is a mesh Sandow, size large. Crest is all tackle twill. Very heavy wear on shoulders, elbows, neck and body. (Thanks to Dan S. for supplying the great photos)

Here is a road jersey from the Indianapolis Checkers. It's a Goodman mesh with sewn on numbers, team crest, and nnob. The team crest is fully embroidered. Old style fight strap can barely be seen through the jersey right below the crest. Jersey shows great wear on the sleeve with many team repairs. The only two players I know of wearing #3 with the Checkers is Randy Johnston from 1979-83 and Ken Leiter in 1983/84. If you know or have a picture of them wearing this jersey, please email me and I'll add it to this page. (thanks to Steve E. for the photo)
